A specialty made from a batter usually consisting of flour, liquid, egg, oil and cooked in a special hinged cooking utensil called a "waffle iron" which cooks both sides at once and gives waffles their honeycombed syrup-catching surface.

Belgian waffles are often heaped with fruits and whipped cream.
