1 lb  dried red beans
3 Tbs  shortening
4 Tbs  chili powder
   Salt to taste
2   medium-sized onions, chopped
   Shortening for frying
1 1/2 lbs  ground round of beef
 

Soak red beans overnight. Cook them in unsalted water until soft.

Add shortening and 2 tablespoons chili powder. Salt to taste. Fry onions with shortening until soft.

Add ground beef, remaining chili powder, and salt to taste. Stir until the meat is seared. Cover with water and cook slowly until done.

Add the meat mixture to the red beans and simmer a few minutes longer.
