My grandma, Opal Van Leuven, used to make home-made chili with this fried bread recipe. It's quick, easy and tastes great. It can even be used as a dessert, with honey drizzled over it, or dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Usually I cut the dough into rectangles, but my daughter occasionally likes to use cookie cutters.
2 cups  Unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tsp  baking powder
1 cup  milk
1/2 tsp  salt
oil for frying; enough for a 3/4" depth

Mix flour and baking soda together, add salt to taste. Mix in milk or water. If it's still sticky, add more flour by the tbs. for a stiff dough.

Roll out dough to about 1/2" thick, cut into squares, rectangles, or desired shape.

In a heated skillet with approx. 2 cups of oil, fry the bread on both sides until light brown and puffy.

Remove from oil and place on paper towels to drain.
